This week the class became much more enjoyable, mostly because Mr. Schoenborn is now back from paternity leave. As a result of this, we got much more in depth into our subjects than we have in the last month. We discussed the PoW for a longer period of time, and really got into the meaning. PoW essays now cover two poems, so I am glad that we got to discuss them more. This led to the really hard discussion, where we try to find out what the poem is actually trying to say, that I remember from earlier in the year. We also talked about grading PoW essays and what makes a good essay. I read an essay this week and tried to grade it accurately but I graded it much too high which makes me nervous about how they grade the AP test. The essay that I gave a 9 was given a 7. That also brings me to my main growth this week. One of the reasons that the poem I graded wasn't perfect was that it was too structured. It had a well worded intro and 3 paragraphs covering different aspects of the poem. Normally I think that this would be a good thing and make it easier to read and understand, but on the AP test they want you to weave everything together. They don't treat the essay as a paper but more as a weaving or artwork. That made me really nervous. However, this week I will try to not try and structure my essay. I will just write and let whatever happens happen. It probably won't turn out well, but if that happens there's always next week.
The other thing we did this week is we discussed our critical theory paper. This project is going to take a look at a Shakespearean play through the lens of a theory. As an example, my group is looking at the play Macbeth through the lens of feminist critic. So our project will mostly be about what the play says about gender and how women are treated. It should be an interesting topic to cover, especially because the feminism movement is a very active part of society today.
